Blackpool, Engand’s Gay Capital of the North

To many in Britain, Blackpool conjurs up visions of fairy lights, bars and clubs, the seafront and of course, the famous tower, all blended into a pleasingly tacky city. However, to the British LGBT community, it is the Gay Capital of the North.

Blackpool’s gay scene is thriving with a high sexual temperature in many of the bars and clubs. For the more reserved, many of the bars are quieter during the day, and a number offer live entertainment. Many of the gay guesthouses in Blackpool have their own bars on site where guests can relax and meet others. Gay and lesbian lodging in Blackpool is plentiful. Gay owned Pride Lodge is highly rated by its guests, and received one of the 2009 Pink Choice Awards. One suggestion for lesbian accommodation in Blackpool would be Gabrielle’s. It has yet to be rated on Pink Choice so we would love to hear from you if you have stayed there.

There are no end of choices for evening entertainment. Mardi Gras is a popular gay, cruisy cabaret/disco club. The Flying Handbag is a modern gay pub with a party atmosphere. For the ultimate in clubbing, you should head to the multi-level, state of the art Flamingo Club. Other gay options include the relatively new Boot Camp and Kaos Bar. Of course, no visit ¬†would be complete without taking in Funny Girls, Blackpool’s famous lady-boys show. It is not a gay venue per se, although it attracts a fair number along with all the other Blackpool tourists.

If you’re looking for gay saunas, Blackpool has a choice of three: the Honeycombe Sauna, the Acqua and Wet Wet Wet.

This year Blackpool celebrated its fifth gay pride parade.
