St Martin: The Gay-Friendly Caribbean Island with a French Flair

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

Marigot Bay St Martin

This tropical island is the closest European destination from the USA! Only a few hours flight! It is the smallest island in the world which is divided into 2 countries, French, and Dutch. Hence the very gay-friendly and open-minded atmosphere! This aspect developed even more with the growing tourism since the 50s. Luxury yachts, private jets, rich and famous go there and to St Barth. You can speak in English everywhere, and pay everything in US dollars if you want!

Today, it is the most cosmopolitan island in the world probably, with more than 100 different nationalities who choose to live and work there. With such a variety of people, no doubt the restaurants have followed the path, and on the French side, the village of Grand Case is also called the gastronomy capital of the Caribbean. You can taste delicious creole food, eat in tiny restaurants with romantic terraces overlooking the sea, have sea food, live lobsters in aquariums, fresh fishes, and tasty French specialties.

The beaches offer a large choice also: 32 at least, quiet and secluded, or vibrant with nautical sports, beach bars, some shady, others very long, definitely a pleasure to tan or walk, even nude : Cupecoy is the famous gay beach, with nice cliffs, and Orient Bay has a large nude beach with facilities, and hosts Club Orient, large gay-friendly nude resort.

This open-minded atmosphere, on a scenic tropical island, attracted many artists (painters, sculptors, ceramists, precious wood marqueters, photographers). You can discover their workshops easily, or visit the art galeries. Dont miss (on appointment) Patrick Poivre de la Freta, who studied with Dali!

The French side hosts Eros, the gay club with regular shows, plenty gay-friendly bars, lounges and restaurants, and is quiet, with many green areas, a natural reserve, and Pic Paradis famous Loterie Farm with their Eco Extreme Zip Line, their Hidden Forest Café and Tree Lounge. The Dutch side is more heavily built, has lots of casinos, a vibrant night life, the cruise ship terminal, etc.

Duty Free shopping is popular for liquors, watches, perfumes etc. as there are no import duties at all on the island, and the streets of Marigot, the French capital, along the Marina Royale, have many luxury boutiques, nice fashion men’s clothing and underwear.

The gay life is present and active while discreet. Many gays have established themselves on the island, in all avenues. In terms of lodging, Villa Rainbow is the exclusively-gay small luxury guesthouse, located on top of the island with breathtaking views on the Caribbean sea. Perfect for relaxing and romantic male holidays.

Arosa Gay Skiweek 2011

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Arosa is located in southeast of Switzerland, at the end of the Schanfigg-valley. With its extraordinary geographical location not far from St. Moritz and Davos, it boasts a maximum of sunny days whilst being protected by the winds. Since 1877 this traditional alpine ski resort has become a “must” for mountain and sun lovers. On it’s altitude of 1800m (6000 feet) you can be sure that there’s plenty of snow for all snow sports. Whether you like carving the slopes and skiing back to your hotel at the end of the day – you’ll be right in the center of the action. With easy access by train or by car you’re only two and a half hours away from Zürich and it’s international airport.

Since its launch in January 2005, the Arosa Gay Skiweek has become one of the most important events in Arosa. In Winter 2010 the organizers were able to welcome more than 350 participants who make the Arosa Gay Ski- week one of the biggest winter events in the gay/lesbian community and one of the highlights on the event calendar. Arosa welcomes guests from over 30 countries and alongside skiers and snowboarders there are also many non-skiers, après-skiers, party people, and others who simply want to sunbathe in the complimentary sun loungers at the Tschuggenhütte facing the Weisshorn and a breathtaking alpine panorama.

Next to the winter sports activities, the side events have become just as important. The organizers have surpassed themselves yet again this year with a fantastic lineup of cultural events, DJ’s and other international artists. As before, Arosa will host artists such as e.g. Michel Dalberto (F), world famous pianist, for a classical concert in the village church and La DivaLive (B), a high-class singer and entertainer, for a fabulous show on the Eden stage. Gourmet dinners, several single table dinners for people who wish to meet other friendly participants and champagne tasting are also on the list of events. The highlights of every year are still the Fondue Party on the mountain, sledging down at night and the horse-drawn sleigh ride to the Tschuggenhuette for the colorful DragQueen Fun Race.

The date for the next 7th Annual Gay Ski week is 8th-15th January 2011, and  more than 400 participants are expected, which will be another new participation record. Accommodation is available for every budget starting with a 5 star grand deluxe hotel (with it’s most amazing Spa of the Alps) to the typical traditional bread & breakfast. Pink Choice is anxious to hear from participants, so if you attend, please tell us about your experience and rate your accommodation by writing a review.
